Weird slash em’ up Bayonetta is hotly tipped to be one of the best new action games when it comes out early next year.
But how does it play? Leet Games Blog were at the 2009 Eurogamer Expo to find out.
The first thing that strikes you about Bayonetta is the way it feels. It’s a very accessible game, fun to play and control.
You take control of Bayonetta, a female witch with all manner of insane moves to take down your evil opposition such as demons and living statues.
You have access to some incredible moves. We could only play the game on the easy (automatic) mode, which only requires a few random button bashes to pull off spins, sword combos and “climax” moves, which are like specials.
Our “climax” at the 2009 Eurogamer Expo involved Bayonetta getting half naked before summoning a swirling black whirlwind – complete with its own face – to literally tear apart our enemies.
It’s all very peculiar but don’t let that put you off because there is a surprisingly good game lurking beneath the surface here, very reminiscent of the original Devil May Cry. And not the disappointing latter games in that franchise.
It makes sense, because developer Hideki Kamiya was responsible for the first Devil May Cry and artistic underrated classic Okami. You can watch Mr Kamiya playing Bayonetta here.
The game is very fluid, fast-paced and enjoyable. It’ll make a nice alternative to God of War 3 if you’re tired of the previous God of War games or are under 18 years old.
Gameplay is sexy and graphics are gorgeous. As well as all the ridiculous combos you can pull off, the enemies are varied and creatively designed. You can even take a bosses weapon when its dead and use it to kill future enemies in your quest – for example we killed a golem and took its giant golden axe to crush other baddies.

There was a nice set-piece on a bridge where a mutant smashed through the wall next to us. We had to attack its giant face while jumping to avoid collapsing as he regularly picked up and shook the bridge we were standing on.
It’s an impressive game and we can’t wait to play it when it’s released. Bayonetta will be available to buy on January 8, 2010.

[...] Bayonetta has done remarkably well to shoot straight into second place, despite featuring in a game which was only released in January 2010. She’s a menacing bitc… we mean, witch, with guns attached to her feet and hair which can summon demons. Add torturing angels and bullet time to the mix and we’ve got ourselves a close runner-up.
