Forza Motorsport 3: hands-on

With Gran Turismo 5 still not out despite five years in the making, can Forza 3 capitalise on Sony’s massive delay?

Leet Games Blog were among the first to play the Xbox 360’s next big racing game – Forza 3. Here’s what we thought…

Forza 3 feels like a cross between an arcade-style racer and a deep simulator – the cars look impressively realistic, physics are spot on and gameplay is intense.

We were able to drive five cars across a narrow two-minute track – the Audi R8, Mini John Cooper Works, Ferrari California, Porsche 911 GT3 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X.

What’s great about Forza 3 is the inclusion of vehicle damage – hit another car and you’ll see the results – even in that shiny red Ferrari! And if you have a particularly nasty smash you can hit ‘back’ to rewind the race slightly and re-take control of the part before you lost control.

There are five levels of difficulty – easy, medium, hard, advanced and expert. But what’s cool is the ability to customise this. For example by default the game turns on a ‘racing line’ on the track – green represents speed and red tells you when to brake.

You can opt to switch this off, and mix and match the following as you please: traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking, opponent difficulty and automatic braking (we turn this off as you can overtake easier if you know what you’re doing).

This makes Forza 3 a versatile game for petrolheads, beginners and improvers alike. My girlfriend was just as comfortable taking the Mini JCW round the track as I was the Porsche 911 GT3 (you really notice the difference between cars – noise, handling and speed-wise).

There will be over 100 tracks and 400 cars to choose from in the final version of the game. Gamers will also be able to make their own custom paint jobs on cars and trade them over Xbox Live. Getting very excited about this game indeed.

First Leet thoughts:
A must for racing fans, beginners and petrolheads alike! 4/5
