Ever since the internet emerged and Xbox Live pit millions of gamers in matches against one another, more and more games began featuring online-only modes. We’ve picked our top five in this round-up. If you’re looking for a different gambling online games site, there’s plenty of them available too.
World of Warcraft
It has almost 10m subscribers for a reason – World of Warcraft is undoubtedly the finest MMO RPG we’ve ever played. You choose your race, class and gender, before embarking on quests with thousands of players, exploring miles upon miles of locations and discovering loot.
The player-versus-player aspect is also brilliant. You can play games like Capture the Flag in Battlegrounds, or join a PVP server to be able to attack opponents whenever you come across them in the world.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Why Modern Warfare 2 and not the other Call of Duty games? Because it was the first Modern Warfare title which spawned a gargantuan gaming franchise and introduced the classic online multiplayer gameplay that so many other first-person shooters would try to imitate.
Playing online and getting stuck into firefights, while talking to your team and planning your next attack was just an adrenalin-inducing experience.
League of Legends
This free-to-play strategy game has pulled in millions of players and has become a penchant for esports professionals and PC gamers across the world. You pick a champion, and join a team of two or four other players, who must go up against three or five humans (or bots).
It’s a classic Defense of the Ancients style game – a mod game mod for the old Warcraft and Starcraft games – where you must team up to destroy your opponents’ towers and ultimately their base. You level up as you kill enemies and can upgrade your champion in a different way each game. The customisation options are more than enough for any discerning RPG fan, too.
The beautiful game just got even more beautiful. EA’s latest footy sim lets you take part in the Seasons mode in FIFA Ultimate Team this year, where you must win games to get promoted to the next division, and earn coins. All the top footballers and teams from across the globe are in the game, from Messi to Ronaldo and Rooney.
It’s a must for any casual player, sports game or football fan. Online matches are intense, fun, and there’s no better feeling than when you score a screamer from 30 yards out.
Words with Friends
Ann odd choice, we know, but as an iPhone title it’s still an online game, and a damn addictive one at that. It’s basically like the classic board game Scrabble, where you must match letters together to create words on the board in certain ways to get a high score.
It’s not always the easiest game in the world, but it’s very social, casual and enjoyable, and we’re sure our friends are using dictionaries to place down some words on the board we’ve never heard of…
